"I LOVE LUCY" BEHIND THE SCENES

The work schedule for I Love Lucy took up the entire weak, from early in the morning to late at night each day, every single person involved with the show was working hard to help create the greatness of each new episode being filmed...

Please note, this is not a recent television schedule for upcoming Lucy episodes on television...!

  • Ideas for a new script or story-line are developed by Madelyn Pugh Davis and Bob Carroll, Jr., which are later given to Jess Oppenheimer for a series of reviews. By the end of the day, a story is formed and developed, and will take further planning throughout the week.

  • Lucy, Desi, Vivian and Bill go over the new script which has been completed for the new show that week, discussing certain elements and ideas within and for the script and story-line.
  • The sets and stages are assembled with all necessary walls and grounding in place. This includes the three main sets on the soundstage: The Ricardo's apartment, the Tropicana set and the extra set for any various scene in the new script.

  • The gang gets ready for a dress rehearsal with all necessary lighting and stage management in place and prepared.
  • The final draft copy of the script is complete, and Jess Oppenheimer adds his changes and new suggestions.
  • Props are located and ready for the actual filming.

  • Lighting and cameras are arranged and set up in their proper working and focusing places.
  • A dress rehearsal is held at 7:30p.m. without any cameras.
  • The cast and crew have a small dinner on the set.
  • Any last minute script changes are made.

  • New story ideas are developed for the next week.
  • A dress rehearsal is held at 4:30p.m., this time with the cameras.
  • By 7:30p.m., the audience is settled down in the studio, and Desi does his usual "warming up" the audience bit before they begin. He also introduces the cast members.
  • At 8:00p.m. official filming of the new episode is filmed.

    • The weekend is free time for the cast and crew. Lucy and Desi did not do any other major filming or productions on the weekends, except for their [now famous] home movies. (Unlike other film/TV actors like Jerry Lewis, for instance, they did not continue working extensively on weekends…)
